ABOUT THE BOOK

Before a man can become who he was made to be, he has to go back to where it began.

Not to relive it. Not to stay there. But to finally name what happened, and choose something different.

Most men learned early that they had to hold it together.

Figure it out alone. Never let anyone see them fall apart. So they built lives that look fine from the outside, while something inside has been missing for a very long time.

The Rebuilt Man is the book that finally asks men what that something is.

Across the world, men are dying by suicide at a rate that should stop us all in our tracks. Behind every one of those numbers is a boy who was hurt, a man who learned to hide it, and a silence no one thought to break.

This book breaks it.

Written by trauma therapist Dawn Williams, alongside the honest voices of 100 men, The Rebuilt Man names the wound, takes off the mask, and walks you step by step towards the man you were always meant to be.

Who this book is for

This book is for you if…

  • You were told to "man up" long before you knew what you were feeling.

  • You carry something from childhood you have never said out loud.

  • Your life looks solid from the outside, but you feel empty, angry or numb on the inside.

  • You are a father who wants to hand your children something different from what you were handed.

  • You have lost a mate, a brother or a son to silence, and you want to understand why.

  • You love a man who is struggling, and you want to know how to reach him.

Landscape

You don't have to be at rock bottom to start rebuilding. You only have to be honest.

THE JOURNEY INSIDE: FIVE HONEST PHASES

  1. The Wound — Where it started. The boy, the home, the moments that taught you who you had to be to survive.

  2. The Mask — The armour you built. The anger, the silence, the busyness, the substances, the "I'm fine."

  3. The Reckoning — The moment the mask stops working, and the courage to look at what's underneath.

  4. The Rebuild — The real work. New beliefs, new patterns, and the relationship you have with yourself.

  5. The Man — Who you become when the pieces are healed, and what you pass on to the men coming after you.

Supporting line: Every chapter is grounded in trauma-informed practice and global research, and carried by the real words of men who have walked the road before you.

THE VOICES

rebuilt-man-stats-100-12-6.png

This book was not written about men. It was written with them.

Dawn asked 100 men the same three questions:

  1. What is a rebuilt man?

  2. What does it mean to be one?

  3. What is missing, that could be driving the global epidemic of men's suicide?

They answered from across the world and across every stage of life. Fathers and grandfathers.

Pastors and chaplains. Soldiers and police. Athletes, tradesmen, teachers and leaders in men's health. The youngest is 20. The oldest has lived more than eight decades.

Their answers are raw, wise and, at times, hard to read. Together they say what one man alone could never say: you are not the only one, and it is not too late.

100 voices · 12 countries · 18–82 years · 16 chapters

WHY DAWN WROTE THE BOOK

"Why would a woman write a book for men?"

I get asked that a lot.

Here is my answer.

I have sat across from men in my counselling room who had never said the hardest sentence of their life out loud until that moment.

I have watched strong men shake as they finally named what happened to the boy they used to be. And I have stood beside families who lost a man to a silence no one knew how to break.

I am not writing as a man. I am writing as a therapist, a wife and a mother of four who refuses to keep watching.

That is why I didn't write this book alone. I handed the microphone to 100 men, and I let them speak.

When The Rebuilt Woman went out into the world, men kept writing to me: Where is ours? This is ours.
